Happy New Year and welcome to 2013! Christmas is over for another year and my thoughts have turned to taking down the tree and decorations. I’m not keen on this part and there is more than one reason for this. Firstly, I love Christmas and have no desire to remove all traces of it for another year. And secondly, but equally important to me, I can’t stand the gap left behind when all of the glitter and sparkle is removed. I’m sure I’m not alone in this so read on for our advice on injecting some new life into your home for Spring!
- Decorate a feature wall. Some new wallpaper can dramatically change the look and feel of a room. It doesn’t have to cost the earth, especially if you are only covering one wall. Make sure the pattern and colour you choose are right for you and seek advice from a staff member at your local DIY store if you need some help. Have a look around online and you might even find a sale or two to help you decorate for less.
- Update your flooring. Scuffs and scrapes can easily occur during a time of year when lots of people in heels are dancing the night away on your wood floor. Or towards the stroke of midnight as the revellers raise a glass – and spill red wine all over your carpet. You might not have the desire or the budget to replace the flooring but you can easily inject some colour by adding a new rug. Even if your floor survived the Christmas festivities, the addition of a new rug can make a bare room feel much more like home.
- It’s curtains for you! Some beautiful new curtains can freshen up a room in an instant. Even if you prefer blinds you can still hang curtains for decorative purposes and they will make a huge difference to the way your room looks. Try not to overshadow the window by having larger or darker curtains than you need. This can make your room seem smaller so try to choose something simple that works with the rest of the room.
- Get comfy with cushions. Adding a dash of colour to your sofa can really help to bring a room to life. Buying cushions that complement the rest of your new colour scheme can be just the thing you need to tie the room together. Buy comfy, practical cushions that have removable, machine washable covers. This is even more important if you have children or pets!
A good Spring clean and a lick of paint can do wonders to boost your mood after Christmas. Who knows, that alone might be just what you need. After the Christmas chaos, calming colours and a minimalist room might do the trick. So put the kids to bed, pack their new toys into a cupboard or storage boxes and enjoy the peace and quiet with your feet up.
